Over the last few months there has been a lot of controversy around a certain costume. This outfit comes in an orange jumper, rubber alien mask and the words written across the chest, "Illegal Alien". It leads some to think that the costume is inappropriate and hurtful to immigrants who live in the USA. Many of the larger retailers like Target, Wal-Mart and others have been asked to take the costumes from their shelves. Target complied and removed it from its shelves immediately.
Other retailers are riding the market and are completely sold out. They can't keep the costume on the shelves. They are selling them so fast that they are refusing to listen to the organizations that are calling for all retailers to drop them from their store shelves and websites.
I have been writing for a long time. I am of Latin descent and have watched this controversy grow. CNN, Fox and all the big news agencies are covering the progression of this story. Yet I find it kind of comical that so much emphasis and effort is being put on a costume.
I believe it is more of a marketing ploy to sell a really inexpensive costume for a lot more money than it is worth. I personally do not find it offending. I see it as a marketing strategy to take advantage of a very hot topic.
I really don't believe the intent of all the people buying this costume are to poke fun of immigrants. I believe many just think it is funny or a good conversation piece for a Halloween party. I believe as a society, we have become too sensitive to the world around us.
We focus too much on the bad and not on the good. If the media never picked up this story, this costume would have been just like any other controversial costume. It would have had its time and then disappeared from the store shelves forever. Yet now this will not be the case. This costume will probably be one of the top-selling costumes of the year.
I usually only write articles that are general in nature and I tend to stay away from the more controversial subjects. I do not like to offend people. Yet, this topic was a little too much for me not to touch. As I found it fascinating to see how a simple costume could take the focus away from a failing economy, job loss and our housing crises.
It is a shame a thing like national pride, a hard day's work, carrying for the family and educating our young don't get the same attention. A piece of orange plastic and a mask seems to have more importance in our society. I truly hope that the attention on this mask dies down and we truly see it for what it is a mask that pokes a bit of fun at a current event.
