Buying the Right Video Games

I have two sons, who both live with their mother after we divorced five years ago. Despite this, I have remained close to the boys, and have always tried to be a hands-on parent even though I was no longer living with them. My house is just around the corner from theirs, and I have made sure they were always comfortable enough to simply pop round.

I bought a games console a couple of years ago, the same make and model as they have at home, and they often call round to play for a while. It's a nice way for me to maintain a link with them, and I even try my hand at playing one or two of their favourite games from time to time, so I can join in with them occasionally.

Having said that, I am completely hopeless at pretty much all of them. So, they invariably end up laughing their heads off at my feeble attempts. I don't mind that, though, because it helps us to retain a good relationship. If that is achieved by looking a bit of a fool from time to time, then it's easily worth it.

One of their favourite games is a football simulation title. They're both extremely good at it, and I'm equally bad at it. No matter how hard I try, I can't seem to make my players do what theirs do. I haven't told them, but I've even practised when they aren't there, but I haven't got any better, and my fingers and thumbs ache after a while - part of being older, I guess.

The only games I ever seem to be any good at are those that involve a lot of shooting. I don't know what it would say about my personality, but I love helping to save the planet from an invasion of particularly aggressive aliens from a distant galaxy. Mind you, the boys are still better than me at it.

I recently played a game that was set in the Wild West, and it got me completely addicted for a while. It reminded me of all the Western movies I watched in my youth, and it was fantastic to take part in duels, to defend trains from outlaw attacks and to take on challenges such as cattle driving and catching wild horses.

When the boys come round, we sometimes order in a pizza and play the latest games for a few hours, especially at the weekends. I really enjoy their company, and it obviously helps me to remain close to them. It's surprising how often and how easily they'll talk about their lives while they're here, so that enables me to stay in touch.

This Christmas, I wanted to get them a couple of games each, but a little while ago I wouldn't have been sure about which ones to get. Thankfully, I know now, because I've heard them talking about some titles that have only just been released. I'll have a look on the Internet for them because I've heard they are cheaper when bought online.
